Storage medium restricts certain elements from being implemented in final product.
July 31, 2007 | 6:49 AM PSTThe team at Bizarre Creations has found the DVD storage medium used in the Xbox 360 to be too small to fully implement all the features desired in Project Gotham Racing 4.
Commenting on its official forums, a Bizarre spokesperson had this to say: "You won't see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn't a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD."
The team is combating this limitation by providing different lighting models per city depending on the weather. “Macau is always in the daytime, but if you play it during a storm everything looks darker and more foreboding”, the forum post explains. “If you play during a blizzard then things are slightly tinged blue and everything seems more frozen. Of course, playing this track in sunshine will make everything appear bright and yellowy."
Microsoft was the subject of heavy criticism at the beginning of the 360’s life for choosing the smaller DVD format over the rising HD-DVD medium. The company stood their ground on the terms that improved compression rates would solve all storage capacity issues.
