How do you improve on a game packed with more wanton destruction than every Hulk movie put together? Add even more destruction and realistic fire -- or at least, that's the idea behind Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. But as much as I'm sure you're all looking forward to Mercs 2, it's not even deploying until August. Even so, that hasn't stopped Mercs 2 creative director Cameron Brown from spilling the beans on the existence of a new entry in the series.
"While we don't want to delay the game, and we certainly don't want to disappoint anyone--and we're keen to ship the game and move on to Mercs 3, Brown replied to Next-Gen when queried about the many delays Mercs 2 has incurred, "it was the right call for us was to make sure that co-op [in Mercs 2] was going to be properly integrated into the experience and to make sure that all that key destruction was really going to be what it needed to be."
Wait, fully integrated co-op, ala Crackdown? Quit wasting your time on interviews and push this game out the door! Erm, I mean, Mercs 3. Cool.
In the same interview, Brown was asked about a possible Wii version of Mercs 2. Now, a separate team at Pandemic is currently knee-deep in developing a PS2 version of Mercs 2, and tradition dictates that Nintendo's tiny sales behemoth should receive some action as well. However, Brown was more than a little reticent to divulge any details.
"I'm going to refer you to [EA's public relations] on that one," he said. "I honestly don't know what I can talk about and what I can't."
Apparently, that was all he needed to satisfy his overlords back at EA*. So, tongue untied, he went on to say, "I personally would love to make a Wii version of Mercs. I think we've had a lot of discussions internally about how we would do that and how we would use the controls. I would love to make something that was really unique to the platform that uses the universe of Mercs in a way that was unique to the Wii."
I tend to agree with Brown on this one, but I imagine the Wii version of Mercs 2 will merely be the PS2 version with badly tacked-on motion controls. It's a shame, too; can you imagine how satisfying it would be to physically lob a grenade into the freshly exposed driver's seat of that pesky tank that's been hounding you? Neither can I. You know why? Because a definitive Mercs experience isn't on the Wii yet. So here's hoping that the PS2 version gets some real spit 'n' shine before making the jump.
*I kid, EA, I kid. You're a benevolent dictator now, or else you wouldn't let me say things like th--
Editor's Take: Hah, David was right. Freedom from the shackles of this tiny box is incredible.
