It's been one hell of a rollercoaster ride for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Sure, we knew the thick obscuring curtain was finally being lifted from a new Mortal Kombat today, but who knew it'd be like this? Well, after numerous reports and trickles of information, we finally have some concrete news about MK vs. DC's plot and characters.
"When a cataclysmic force merges conquerors from two universes, conflict is inevitable," reads Midway's press release. "Kombat forces friends to fight, worlds to collide, and unlikely alliances to be forged. In order to save all they know, the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat must wage war against the combined might of the DC Universe (DCU). How can either side prevail when rage blinds them to the dark threat poised to destroy them all?"
Sounds generic, right? But don't write it off just yet, as you'd be disappointing two very influential comic book authors: Jimmy Palmiotti (Painkiller Jane, Marvel Nights, Jonah Hex, 21 Down) and Justin Gray (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, JLA Classified, Punisher Red X-Mas, The Resistance). Yep, Midway and DC have top talent on MK vs. DC, so when Batman totally beats down everyone, he'll have a good reason.
"It is a truly unique and extremely exciting effort to be teaming up with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics for the first Mortal Kombat game on next generation platforms," said Ed Boon, co-creator and executive producer for Mortal Kombat at Midway Amusement Games. "The DC Universe characters are some of the most popular and enduring characters in the world. By combining them with the Mortal Kombat mythology, all new gameplay modes and features, plus a completely unique storyline crafted by top comic writers, players will now be able to answer the question: what would happen if Batman fought Sub Zero?"
Fortunately, the game isn't titled "Batman vs. Sub Zero," -- because it'd get boring to watch repeated one-sided Batman victories -- and, as of now, we can confirm that Superman and Scorpion will also be joining the fray.
Actual gameplay will include a story mode with two unique perspectives that intertwine to tell the full story. A new fighting system will hopefully bring back those jaded with Mortal Kombat's stale stylings; it includes Freefall Kombat and close Kombat along with multi-tiered environments.
MK vs. DC is still a ways off, coming in fall 2008 to the Xbox 360 and PS3. But until then, I think fan fiction's got you covered.
