Having fun tearing through "Still Alive" with a crowd of friends in Rock Band? Well, stack a few fresh cushions on your drumming chair, because, if you're in the need of some Portal action circa-2008, "Still Alive" is all you've got.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Valve's Doug Lombardi was quick to point out that Portal 2 won't be delighting gamers this year. Why? Ambition.
"In typical Valve tradition, it won't be Portal with different colours," said Lombardi. "I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there - do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it; or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, 'Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary.'
So, uh, GOTY 2012? Half-Life wasn't exactly a spring chicken when its sequel finally grav-gunned its way onto millions of gamers PCs. Still though, I applaud Valve's desire for quality over quantity, as, after the Internet's love affair with the original Portal, I'd be loathe to see a simple rehash. It'd just feel tired. With this mindset, regardless of how many eons Valve may spend tinkering away at Portal 2, at least we can be sure the game will do something unexpected. In the meantime, here's my suggestion: why not toss the Portal Gun into a Half-Life title?
Oh, wait.
