My favorite things in life number few. They include video games, writing, bad puns, and Bioware. A new Bioware RPG is, for me, a holiday in itself -- or a string of holidays, as Bioware games are built strong to last long. Thus, it brings me great joy when Bioware says anything, especially when it's something good. Luckily, today's tasty morsel of Bioware news is mostly wonderful, although the aftertaste is a tad acrid.
Not only is CEO Ray Muzyka Bioaware of DLC, he embraces it with open arms. "We did a lot of post-release content with Neverwinter Nights, we're planning to do more on Dragon Age in the future as well and Mass Effect and other products we have in development", he noted in a chat with CVG. "We just want to make sure we're satisfying what the fans want first, so often it's good to get their feedback and say, 'What kinds of things would really be exciting to you?', and how can we put those in the game."
Oh Mr. Muzyka, devotion to satisfying fans and DLC? You know just how to please a gamer. And really, Bioware's forward-thinking attitude is a firm first step into a DLC-powered future that -- believe me -- is coming. Just take a look at Steam's success, and the constraints optical media impose on developers. It may be a little while yet, but you can count on DLC's utter ubiquity.
Unfortunately, my exuberance was tempered by another tidbit from Muzyka -- one concerning Mass Effect's forthcoming second round of DLC. When CVG threw a "So when's it coming out?" at the good doctor, he nimbly dodged the question. Instead he replied with this little number:
"You know, it's all about the quality. So we want to make sure it's a really great experience; and we also want to do different things, we like experimenting and trying different things for post-release content."
Yep, as per usual, the Bioware crew is taking its time, crafting the best space faring experience possible. Sadly, this means we won't be rejoining the Normandy crew for a good while. But, at the very least, we can be sure the DLC will be up to the standard we've come to expect from Muzyka and co. Until then, we'll just have to make do with byproducts from Bioware's sci-fi opus.
