Rockstar Lets It All Hang Out in Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned
February 17, 2009 | 12:04 PM PST
Yesterday revealed that gamers could download an Avatar clothing package based on the newly-released Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable episode, The Lost and Damned. But now, it's probably a safe bet that any number of those gamers would gladly give back that package if it means they won't have to look at one character's package.
When you see first meet Congressman Thomas Stubbs, who is receiving a massage at a gentleman's club when he meets protagonist Johnny Klebbitz, you may want to avert your eyes (unless, of course, you're into that kind of thing). 1UP says stuff remains relatively tasteful until the 3:09 mark, if you're curious.
So what do we think about this: cheap publicity stunt by Rockstar, or is the plucky developer once again trying to break new ground for what's acceptable in a video game? -- 61FPS
I really don't know what to think of this, but I'm going in with "cheap publicity stunt." Because as Kotaku notes:
The ESRB rating for the game—which is "M" for Mature—does make mention of the gratuitous digital dick on display, noting that the game has "Nudity" in its content. The original Grand Theft Auto IV is listed as having only "Partial nudity."
After the much more subtle, much more hidden "Hot Coffee" incident back in GTA: San Andreas, which depicted a pair of characters essentially dry-humping and lead to the game should being rated Adults Only, effectively banning it from retail until new versions were made, this is ridiculous.
It's basically poking an angry dog with a stick. In fact, I have a hunch that this is actually a reaction of sorts to that incident, though I don't know what it will prove.
On the other hand, maybe this is considered okay, given that he's not participating in the act of sex, merely standing there nude. Perhaps Rockstar is simply using an electron microscope to see just how close they can get to the line without crossing over it. And if they are, then how might they top this?
Whatever the answer, expect to hear a lot more about this sooner than later.
