Media: TransFormers: Revenge of the Fallen Videos, Play at BotCon This Weekend
May 28, 2009 | 4:11 PM PST

Casey told us quite a bit about his experience with Activision's upcoming TransFormers: Revenge of the Fallen video game, based on the upcoming movie by Michael "Awesome" Bay. And if that got you excited enough to want to transform and roll out to play it yourself, then you might be in luck.

If you're lucky enough to attend BotCon this weekend (May 28th-31st at the Pasadena Convention Center), then you'll have a chance to play the game before anyone else. In addition to trying the game out, there will also be multiplayer challenges for a chance to win prizes.

"We are thrilled to bring the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen video game to the thousands of fervent Transformer fans attending BotCon," said Rob Kostich, head of marketing for licensed properties, Activision Publishing, Inc. "It's the perfect opportunity for us to give them a chance to experience massive multiplayer battles as their favorite robots before the game launches on June 23."

If that's not enough to get your engines revving, here's a video of Peter Cullen and Frank Welker reprising the roles they made famous 25 years ago as Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively:

Next up: A look at the single-player campaign, including a classic line from Optimus:

Of course, while single player is good and all, who doesn't want to fight their friends til their spark fades in multiplayer?

Hah, "if all fails, use Optimus." I can dig that.

The Allspark offers the following details on the multiplayer mode:

Besides an epic single player mode (in which you single handledly get the chance to hand Demolishor his skid plate), there is also a heavy focus on multiplayer -- something sorely lacking from the previous installment.

MultiPlayer modes include:

* Deathmatch – Each Transformer for himself. Destroy as many other players as you can in the time allotted. The player with the most points (not kills) at the end of the round wins.
* Team Deathmatch – Autobots versus Decepticons! Eliminate as many members of the opposing faction as possible within the allotted time. The team with the highest combined kill count wins.
* One Shall Stand – This is a team leader mode, where one Autobot will be Optimus Prime and one Decepticon will be Megatron. The object is to kill the opposing leader.

- If you are not the team leader, you will continue to respawn as long as your leader is alive. Protect your leader and attack the opposing leader!

- If you are the leader, you will not respawn! But you can see the position of the enemy leader at all times, so guide your teammates.

- If a leader dies, that team has 60 seconds to defeat the opposing leader, or they lose.

- The player who kills the enemy leader will become his team's new leader the next round.

* Control Points – Players split into teams. Fight for control by taking over all five of the control points on the map.

- Capture the 5 control points in order.

- The middle points start neutral and must be captured first.

- Color-coded beacons indicate which points should be captured or defended.

- Control points are also indicated on the radar.

- Once a point is captured, it cannot be re-taken for 10 seconds

* Battle for the Shards – This is a 'capture the flag' mode where both teams race to acquire the parts of the AllSpark. There are AllSpark Shards spread across the level. You grab them and take them back to your base. You can only walk with the Shards. If you transform, or get killed, you drop the Shard

And finally, Associate Producer Adrian Murphy sheds some light of his own on what to expect from the new game:

"The movie is from the perspective of the humans" isn't exactly what I wanted to hear; I thought the first one covered that well enough. But "the game is from the view of the robots" certainly has its appeal.

And it sounds like "Seeker" is definitely Skywarp. I guess they just didn't want to use the name, in case a later movie brings in the real deal.

The way it sounds, multiplayer seems to have an almost Team Fortress 2 element to it. I can dig that, as well as the DLC support, though I guess that's just for the big boxes.

I never got to play the original, and it sounds like I didn't miss much (except perhaps in the DS version), but this one has me rather excited. I hope it turns out as good as it seems.
