This is why we've split our reviews into four sections: What the Game's About, What's Hot, What's Not and Final Word, so that you can easily find the information you want from our reviews.
What the Game's About
Guitar Hero: Smash Hits is a compilation of the best Guitar Hero songs that still haven't gotten the "band" treatment. Grab your friends and relive some classic moments from the first Guitar Hero and beyond.
What's Hot
Guitar Hero: Smash Hits is ready to rip up your living room with a track list that is incredibly epic. Imagine all your favorite songs from past Guitar Heroes that were made prior to Guitar Hero: World Tour (Guitar Hero 4) being given a makeover and republished for band play. All the songs are the master recordings meaning no more cover bands. Guitar Hero first appeared on the scene in 2005, but it is still possible to get nostalgic when you are belting out "War Pigs" with Smash Hits. Since the first couple of Guitar Hero games played much differently than the more recent titles, it is nice to see the game smoothed out and leveled up to the most refined levels to date.
What's Not
There have been many, many Guitar Hero games released in short span of time. It is starting to feel like the franchise is being taken for all it is worth. Smash Hits is every bit as successful as the previous Guitar Hero games and the formula doesn't feel stale, but paying the price of admission for this ride is like the equivalent of buying expensive concert tickets and still having to fork over a small fortune for a t-shirt to remember the show by.
Final Word
It might be too premature to be getting nostalgic about a game that released a short four years ago but Smash Hits does evoke those emotions. If you can get past the feeling that you have already played these songs before, even though these are better recordings, Smash Hits is like a jukebox full of the best songs from Guitar Hero's past.
