Xbox 360 Titles No Longer Required to Be in High Definition
September 3, 2009 | 3:41 PM PST
Good news (I think) for those who enjoy playing their Xbox 360s on a standard-definition television set: Microsoft has lifted the requirement that has been in place since the console's 2005 launch that every game has to run in 1280x720 (720p).
This news comes via the Develop blog of one David Jefferies from ATV and Split/Second developer Black Rock Studio. Within, he reveals that if game developers want or need to, they can release their games in lower, standard definition resolutions.
It is noted that there have been some titles released this way already, such as Halo 3 by Bungie, "who got it waived." Can't possibly imagine how they pulled that off that coup.
Kotaku wonders "how much this decision has to do with recent findings revealing that less than half of Gears of Wars 2's player base owns a high definition television?"
Of course, the only time I've really had a problem is in certain instances of text being too small to read. Has anyone experienced any other problems with an HD game on an SD television?
