Activision CEO Says Modern Warfare 2 Could Be "Biggest Entertainment Launch" of All Time
November 6, 2009 | 2:21 PM PST
Modern Warfare 2 is shaping up to be quite the big release. Really big. Extremely big. Perhaps even absurdly big. So big that when it is released, all the real wars in the world will be put on hold so everyone can play the game.
Okay, maybe not that big.
But close, at least in the eyes of one Mr. Robert "Bobby" Kotick, the Chief Executive Officer of Activision. For you see, during the recent investor call for the company's quarterly financial results, Kotick said he expected Modern Warfare 2 to yield the "largest video game launch of all time." But that wasn't enough.
Mere moments later, he tapped his shades and upped the ante. He would then predict that Modern Warfare 2 could be "one of the largest entertainment launches of any media of all time."
Of course, one might imagine there is a lot of leeway in that kind of rhetoric; there must have been millions of television shows, songs, movies, comics, video games, books, and who knows what all else released over the years. What margin qualifies as "one of" the biggest? If you're the 100th biggest of all time, does that still count?
A characteristically bold statement from Mr. Kotick, just the same. G4TV.com notes that "the last time we heard this kind of rhetoric was Halo 3," and asks "Can Modern Warfare 2 live up to the hype?"
In just three short days, we'll find out for sure. There's no doubt it will be big. But, how big?
